What is the UPZ? The Union of Progressive Zionists is a national network of student activists advocating and education on campuses for peace and social justice in Israel and Palestine. All across North America the UPZ advocates for a pluralistic, democratic Israel at peace with its neighbors.
Who created the UPZ? The UPZ was founded by the veteran social Zionist youth movements, Habonim Dror and Hashomer Hatzair, along with two of the American Jewish organizations most associated with progressive Jewish values – Meretz USA and Ameinu.
Why the UPZ?
The UPZ was created to provide guidance and resources for students who are working to transform the campus debate into a reasoned, nuanced and civil discourse. The current debate on campuses alienates significant numbers of Jewish students who care deeply about Israel. Out of a commitment to a secure and peaceful Israel, the UPZ seeks open dialogue, constructive activism and informed education that warrants a critical analysis of Israel's policies.
UPZ Programming
The UPZ provides consultation to individual campuses on issues as they unfold, and supplies resources for ongoing programming. In addition to making Palestinian and Israeli peace advocates available to speak on campuses throughout the school year, the UPZ offers films, regional speakers, discussion topics and campaign ideas. The UPZ holds an annual conference for interested students from across North America that is info, skill and activist based. The UPZ also coordinates birthright trips to Israel consistent with its progressive Zionist values.
