Omar is an attorney and former U.S. Department of Defense official. Born and raised in Southern California, Omar served as a civilian official in the U.S. Department of Defense for several years. He spent 18 months in Afghanistan during the surge as the coalition’s Deputy Chief of Rule of Law and Political Advisor to the NATO Ambassador. Omar then became a counter-terrorism prosecutor. In this role, Omar supported the capital case against the alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammad, the capital case against the alleged mastermind of the USS Cole bombing, and a case against the alleged Al Qaeda operational commander in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Omar participated in and led investigations overseas involving suspected terrorist network members and leaders. Detailed to the U.S. Department of State, Omar was responsible for developing foreign prosecutions of Guantanamo detainees. During his national security career, Omar proudly represented the United States in nations including Israel, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan.
Omar was the Republican nominee for the 2018 United States Congressional Election in California’s 52nd district.
Omar holds a B.A. in Philosophy from UCLA, J.D. from Syracuse Law School, M.A. in International Relations from the Maxwell School of Public Affairs at Syracuse, and M.S. in Public Relations from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse. Omar’s attorney admissions include New York, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and The Supreme Court of the United States.
Omar’s parents immigrated to California in the early 1970s from Afghanistan. He is the proud child of hard-working and patriotic immigrants who are living proof that the American Dream is still achievable today.
Omar is a reserve officer in the U.S. Army.
